REPENTANCE

"Repentance" is probably the most misunderstood word in language
WHAT REPENTANCE IS NOT:

1. It does not mean to turn away from sin.

2. It does not mean to quit sinning.
3. It does not mean to feel sorry for sin.
4. It does not mean to change your sinful ways before you can be saved.
5. It does not imply salvation.
6. It is not the means of forgiveness of sin.
7. It is not salvation nor does it imply that we should live a sinless life.
8. It does not imply sin.

Repentance has absolutely nothing to do with remorse for sins, and or a determination to not sin any more. God is willing to save the person as he/she is.  The Bible says:

"... while we were still sinners, Christ died for us," Romans 5:8.

WHAT REPENTANCE IS:

 "Repent" comes from a Greek word meaning "change of thought/mind." metanoeo, (metanoeo). This is a compound word. “Meta” means change “noeo” means thinking. This word is derived from “nous” which means mind. So, metanoeo means to “change your mind”;  metamellamai, (metamellamai). This is also a compound word. “Meta” means change “mellamai” means emotions. It means to have a “change of emotions”.

Since we are all condemned because of unbelief follows then that we should turn from our unbelieving mind and not our sins? We are not condemned because of sin. Sins are forgiven when we believe in Christ. Repenting of sin prior to salvation is meaningless because God will not forgive an unbeliever of his sins until he believes. Changing your mind about Christ is repenting. 

 Now, to those who believe that eternal life is earned by good works, the Bible tells them to change their thinking, to "repent."   To stop trusting in works, and come to God through grace by faith alone.

In Matthew 3:7 -9 some religious believed they would go to heaven because they were descendants of Abraham, the father of the Jews.  God had chosen the Jewish race and established the religion. These men were trusting in that alone for salvation. However, John the Baptist had told them to repent. That is, stop trusting that their religion would lead to heaven.

In Hebrews 9:9, the Bible speaks of those seeking to reach God by ordinances or religious rites, and calls these things "dead works." The same author tells us in Hebrews 6:1 that the "foundation" of the Christian faith is "repentance from dead works and having faith only in God." It means that you have to stop relying on "dead works" (religious rites, commandments and the like) in order to exercise genuine faith in God.

The commandment of God is clear. If a man believes that his religion will allow him entrance to heaven, he must repent (Matthew 3:7-9). If he believes that obeying the law will allow him to go with God, he must repent (Luke 13:1-5).  And if he believes that through religious rites he will be saved, he must repent, and stop relying on such things for salvation (Hebrews 6:1)

Faith in Jesus does not save, if one believes that Jesus died for their sins, and yet remains confident that he has to be baptized, attend church, and obey the Ten Commandments to "help" him into heaven. One cannot add to Christ a long list of things to do or be to enter heaven.  All these extra things must be abandoned for they have no value for salvation.  Salvation is Jesus Christ alone and nothing more.

ARREPENTIMIENTO

PROBABLEMENTE EL “ARREPENTIMIENTO” ES LA PALABRA MÁS MAL ENTENDIDA EN EL LENGUAJE.

LO QUE EL ARREPENTIMIENTO NO ES:

1.        No es sentir lástima por sus pecados;

2.      No es dejar los pecados o reformar la vida;

3.       No es una disposición de entrega a Dios para que Él dirija sus pasos.

El arrepentimiento no tiene en absoluto nada que ver con un remordimiento por los pecados ni una determinación a dejarlos. Dios está dispuesto a salvar a la persona tal y como está. La Biblia dice:

“… siendo pecadores, Cristo murió por nosotros,” Romanos 5:8.

LO QUE SÍ ES EL ARREPENTINIEMTO

El arrepentimiento salvador es no confiar en ganar la vida eterna a través de la religión, los ritos religiosas o por obediencia a las leyes de Dios.

“Arrepentir” viene de palabra griega que significa “cambiar de pensamiento.” A los que creen que la vida eterna se gana por las buenas obras, la Biblia les dice que "cambien de pensamiento," es decir que se “arrepientan”. Que dejen de confiar en sus obras, y que lleguen a Dios a través de la gracia por la fe solamente.

En Mateo 3:7-9 algunos religiosos creían que irían al cielo porque eran descendientes de Abraham, el padre de los judíos. Dios mismo había escogido a la raza judía y había establecido su religión. Estos hombres confiaban en ella para su salvación. Sin embargo, juan el Bautista les dijo que tenían que arrepentirse. Es decir, dejar de confiar que su religión los llevaría al cielo.

En Hebreos 9:9-14, la Biblia habla de quienes procuran alcanzar a Dios por ordenanzas o ritos religiosos, y llama a estas cosas “obras muertas.”  El mismo autor nos dice en Hebreos 6:1 que el “fundamento” de la fe cristiana es el “arrepentimiento de obras muertas, de la fe en Dios.”  Quiere decir que uno tiene que dejar de confiar en “obras muertas” (ritos religiosos, mandamientos y cosas semejantes) para poder ejercitar una fe genuina en Dios.

El mandamiento de Dios es claro.  Si el hombre cree que por su religión entrará al cielo, tiene que arrepentirse (Mateo 3:7-9).  Si él cree que obedeciendo la ley irá con Dios, tiene que arrepentirse (Lucas 13:105).   Y si él cree que por medio de los ritos religiosos se salvará, tiene que arrepentirse, y dejar de confiar en tales cosas para la salvación (Hebreos 6:1)

Fe en Jesús no salva, si al mismo tiempo uno cree que Jesús murió por sus pecados, y sigue confiando que tiene que ser bautizado, asistir a la iglesia, obedecer a los diez mandamientos para “ayudarle” entrar al cielo.  No se puede agregar a Cristo una larga lista de cosas para hacer  para entrar al cielo.  Todas estas cosas se tienen que abandonar en que no tienen ningún valor para la salvación, solamaente Jesucristo y nada mas.
