Genesis 6: 1 - 8
Introduction
God took Enoch about halfway between Adam & the flood.
Some of the patriarchs
recorded in the genealogy were alive at the time that Enoch was taken. They had
a lot of time, centuries, to think & reflect, discuss Enoch’s translation.
Did they discuss hope after death? Did Enoch’s peers begin to listen to God’s word
& walk with Him, call on His name? Doesn’t look like many did. Yet it is
thought that some did respond well and began a walk with God and as a result
they died in belief & faithfulness.

But as always, as time
passed & the population began to grow, the ancient culture’s memory of
Enoch began to fade; they possibly regarded the episode with a dismissive

The whole pre-flood
culture began a headlong plug into darkness into degeneration and depravity so
deep that it deserved to die. The account is really appalling and sobering. It
should be taken as a strong warning to all of an angry God’s judgment. There is
another entire book that deals with God’s judgment, yet even there there is
grace.

Corruption of man - (vv. 1-4)-
The first four verses records the how far
the corruption of primeval culture went. The chapter opens with what many agree
as being the most debated issue, text in Scripture. You might, maybe, put it
alongside with the issue of the elect and or the rapture.

A potential problem
with this is in Matthew 22:30, which indicates that
angels do not marry. The Bible gives us no reason to believe that angels have a

take over of the culture by Satan himself and his hosts. Evil was multiplying

& women are at the controls of all of what is going wrong within our own

of God tells us that our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but
against the rulers, against the powers, against the world forces of this
darkness, against the spiritual forces of wickedness in the heavenly places..

God’s Grief
Moses gives us a peek
at God’s heart: The Lord was sorry that He had made man on the earth, and
He was grieved in His heart.

Don’t imagine that God
was surprised or that He was taken unaware. In 1 samuel 15:29 we are told .

Even though God’s joy
& happiness can’t be disturbed, nothing, in a sense, surprises Him, He
isn’t a disinterested observer of the human scene.

A personality trait is
feelings, and here we read that God’s heart was filled with pain. I see this as
a parent or grandparent, though knowing what their child, their grandchild will
go through; when they experience a situation, you don’t really sit back and
just observe. Your heart is filled with pain, compassion, grief. The word
expresses the most intense form of human emotion.

The Plan
The Lord response with
an irrevocable judgment. Verse tells us - I will blot out man whom I have
created from the face of the land, from man to animals to creeping things and
to birds of the sky; for I am sorry that I have made them.

His plan involved the
complete eradication of the human race off the face of the earth along with all

There is no
half-measures with God when dealing with sin, disobedience. The race was
totally demonized and incapable of delivering the promised seed.

Divine Grace
But you know what? Just
like there’s no half-measures in executing judgment, there’s also something
that is super cool; there’s no half-measures in effecting salvation. Verse 8, -
. . . but Noah found favor in the eyes of the Lord.

Like Enoch, Noah
responded to God’s grace, he too walked with God, (v.9); he walked with God in
deepest intimacy & obedience. He knew God.

Listen, Noah was no
different than us, than the rest, he was wretched. He wasn’t saved by his
righteousness. He was saved by grace. If left to himself he would have perished
like the rest.

This side of the flood
we don’t have to worry or fear a universal deluge, (9:12-16). But we have
something worse to fear and that is being drowned under the waves of our own

despite the flood and the cross of Christ, we are a people profoundly sinful in
