Las Anunciaciones, Parte 2, "El Cristo"
El relato del nacimiento de Cristo es
penetrante porque es verdadero, firmemente fijado en la historia con un lugar
real y gente real.
Todo
comenzó para la madre de Cristo (el Mesías) con la anunciación que en sí misma
es una historia de belleza y maravilla.
El corazón
de la obra de Dios a través de los siglos fue Judea y aquí Gabriel, el
mensajero enviado por Dios, pasó por alto Judea y llegó a Galilea, una tierra
de población mestiza, convirtiéndola en un lugar objeto del desprecio judío.
El ángel no
solo pasó por alto Judea, sino también la ciudad de Jerusalén hacia la aldea,
el "no lugar" de Nazaret.
Nazaret no
se menciona en el Antiguo Testamento o en los escritos de Josefo, ni en los
escritos talmúdicos y midráshicos. No fue hasta 1962 que se encontró una
mención precristiana en Cesarea Marítima.
El
posterior pronunciamiento de la ciudad resulta del evangelio cristiano. El
lugar estaba ubicado como una parada a medio camino entre el puerto de Tiro y
Sidón; estaba en mal estado, corrupto, atropellado por gentiles y soldados
romanos.
Recuerde al
veraz, muy genuino, que habla francamente, dígalo como es, Nataniel en Juan
1:46, ¿Puede salir algo bueno de Nazaret?
Nazaret no
fue mucho, y al saltarse Judea y Jerusalén, Gabriel ignoró el templo, el lugar
más sagrado de Israel, y entró en la humilde casa de María, (Miriam), que
ciertamente no era mucho para nuestros estándares.
A los ojos
del mundo, ella tampoco explicaba mucho: no era una princesa Grace de Mónaco,
ni una princesa Diana de Inglaterra, ni Jacquelyn Beauvior Kennedy. Ella no
hablaba cinco idiomas. Mary era demasiado joven para conocer mucho del mundo o
haber logrado mucho.
Según el
Evangelio apócrifo del nacimiento de María, sólo tenía catorce años; El erudito
Raymond Brown, autor del nacimiento del Mesías, abogó por una edad más joven.
A lo sumo,
era una adolescente y, como todas las campesinas pobres, era analfabeta, y su
conocimiento de las Escrituras se limitaba a lo que memorizaba en casa y
escuchaba en la sinagoga.
Todo indica
que su vida no sería nada extraordinario: se casaría, tendría muchos hijos
todos pobres, nunca viajaría más allá de unas pocas millas de su casa y luego,
como todos los demás, los miles más, morirían; un don nadie, en un pueblo de
nada en medio de la nada.
No podemos
perdernos este hecho al mirar este texto de la Anunciación: la noticia más
grande jamás proclamada en Israel llegó a los más humildes de su pueblo.
María dice
lo mismo en su Magnificat mientras canta: “Mi alma engrandece al Señor, y mi
espíritu se regocija en Dios mi Salvador, porque ha mirado la humildad de su
siervo. (Lucas 1: 46-48).
Nueve meses
después, el día de Navidad, fue a los pobres, humildes y pastores marginados a
quienes la hueste celestial de ángeles coreó su anuncio: ¡Gloria a Dios en las
alturas, y paz en la tierra entre aquellos con quienes se complace! (2:14)
Cuando se
considera a quién le llegaron las buenas nuevas, uno tiene que recitar una
lista marcada por las palabras “humilde” y “pobre”.
Martín
Lutero dijo: “Él podría haber ido a Jerusalén y haber elegido a la hija de
Caifás, ella era hermosa, rica, vestida con ropas bordadas de oro y atendida
por un séquito de doncellas esperando. Pero Dios prefirió a una humilde
doncella de un pueblo mezquino ".
Tenemos que
aceptar un hecho espiritual esencial sobre la encarnación y el evangelio: el
Señor viene a las personas necesitadas, aquellas que se dan cuenta de que sin
Él, no pueden hacer nada, no pueden lograrlo; aquellos que reconocen su
debilidad y su carencia espiritual.
La
encarnación, la salvación, la resurrección y la Navidad no son para los
orgullosos y autosuficientes. Tomaremos el pulso del corazón de la virgen
porque María es un modelo para quienes experimentan el nuevo nacimiento, el
Salvador en sus vidas.
El enfoque
El enfoque
de Gabriel - vv26-29
Cómo
Gabriel se acerca a María hay que tener en cuenta cómo seis meses antes se
acercó a Zacarías, dejándolo sin palabras.
¡Conocer a
Gabriel tiene que ser muy intimidante! Podemos estar bastante seguros de que él
no le pareció tan "asombroso" como lo había hecho con Daniel y
Zacarías. Probablemente la habría asustado hasta perder el sentido.
Tenía que
hacer que Mary viera que él era un ser sobrenatural, de hecho un ángel, no
dice, pero tal vez subió un poco el reóstato para darle un poco de brillo o
flotó uno o dos pies por encima del suelo. Sea como fuere, los versículos 26-28
describen el encuentro, el ángel Gabriel fue enviado por Dios a una ciudad de
Galilea llamada Nazaret, a una virgen desposada con un hombre que se llamaba
José, de la casa de David. Y el nombre de la virgen era María. Y se acercó a
ella y le dijo: "¡Saludos, favorecida, el Señor está contigo!"
Mary tenía
entre doce y catorce años, no tenía experiencia; ella no era cosmopolita, ¿cómo
crees que se sentía? Probablemente como desmayarse.
El saludo
de Gabriel - “Saludos, oh favorecido” - Esta no es la versión de Douai, “Ave
María, llena eres de gracia” que proviene de la Vulgata latina, 'Ave Maria
gratia pleta'. Esta fue una traducción defectuosa de la vulgata que llevó a
doctrinas medievales erróneas - Pero eso se puede cubrir en otro momento.
María,
aunque es de hecho la más bendita de las mujeres y la Santísima Virgen María es
una designación adecuada para ella:
El título
surge de la bienaventuranza que ella misma se ha otorgado en el Magnificat:
“Desde la siega en adelante, todas las generaciones me llamarán bienaventurada.
De los
miles de millones de mujeres que han habitado la tierra, María es la única
elegida para cuidar al Hijo de Dios.
Su rostro
es el que más se parece a Cristo. El Salvador tenía algunos de sus rasgos
humanos - Ella es verdaderamente bendecida -
Solo porque
otros hacen que sea un problema darle demasiada importancia a ella; no creas
que nuestro Señor se complace cuando muchos piensan muy poco en ella.
Incluso
desde la cruz, mientras nuestro Señor colgaba teñido, en Sus últimas palabras y
pensamientos estaban en ella, Su madre. Él la miró y le dijo que contemplara a
su hijo, y luego a Juan le dijo que contemplara a su madre. Sus pensamientos
estaban en ella y su bienestar.
El saludo
de Gabriel fue una doble declaración. Primero, fue la receptora del favor
divino, especialmente agraciado, su humilde estado y humildad equivalente la
convirtieron en la receptora ideal del mayor favor de Dios.
Lutero dijo
de ella: “Oh María, eres bendita. Tienes un Dios misericordioso. Ninguna mujer
ha vivido en la tierra a quien Dios haya mostrado tal gracia. Tú eres la corona
de todos ellos ".
Dios pasó
por alto Judea, Jerusalén y el templo y, en cambio, vino a un país despreciado,
un pueblo despreciado y una mujer humilde.
Segundo-
Ella es divinamente favorecida: "El Señor está contigo" - declara el
poder dinámico de la presencia de Dios; corre como un hilo de oro en la vida de
los santos del Antiguo Testamento.
El Señor
estaba con ella.
La
declaración dual a María es uno del favor especial y la presencia especial de
Dios. Esta declaración justifica la traducción que algunos eruditos le dan a
las palabras iniciales de saludo de Gabriel, como Regocíjate, tú que eres muy
favorecido. El Señor está contigo.
Su
respuesta, reacción, revela otra de las cualidades de su bendito corazón: (v29)
- estaba muy preocupada por el dicho y trató de discernir qué tipo de saludo
podría ser este. La sensación es que ella seguía reflexionando sobre lo que
significaba el saludo: cualquiera que fuera la forma de Gabriel, pudo mirar más
allá de su saludo, que meditó mientras buscaba comprensión.
Meditó
sobre lo que el mensaje del ángel significaba para ella y lo que le exigiría.
Su ejemplo tiene relevancia para todos nosotros en los tiempos frenéticos y sin
contemplaciones. - Aquellos que experimentan el nuevo nacimiento, que tienen a
Cristo en ellos, en sus vidas, se toman el tiempo para reflexionar sobre la
Palabra de Dios para ellos.
Salmo 119:
78 - Meditaré en tus preceptos - Estos corazones se necesitan mucho hoy -
siempre lo han sido.
¿Cuándo
contemplamos las condiciones de nuestras vidas, cuándo meditamos en la palabra
de Dios, cuándo nos enfocamos en el curso y el destino hacia donde nos
dirigimos a la luz de la revelación de Dios?
tal vez
incluso estar preocupados como María, ser serios ante Dios y dedicarnos una y
otra vez totalmente a su voluntad.
La
Anunciación
Hasta este
momento, Gabriel no ha dicho nada sobre el motivo de su aparición. Pero ahora
llegó la noticia impactante como leemos en los vv 30-31: “. . . Y he aquí,
concebirás en tu vientre y darás a luz un hijo, y llamarás su nombre Jesús.
A María se
le dijo que iba a tener un bebé; iba a quedar embarazada y le dijeron que
nombrara al niño Jesús.
Mary apenas
pudo captar su impacto total. Gabriel acaba de continuar con el anuncio: será
grande y será llamado Hijo del Altísimo. Y el Señor Dios le dará el trono de su
padre David, y reinará sobre la casa de Jacob para siempre, y su reino no
tendrá fin ”.
El niño
sería el Hijo de Dios, ella sería la madre del Mesías tan esperado - se le
ocurrió la idea –
Las
palabras de Gabriel fueron una interpretación libre de 2 Samuel 7: 8-16 - el
"Pacto Davídico". El texto de Qumrán ha revelado que esta es la forma
en que los judíos entendieron esa profecía: María había escuchado estas líneas
en las lecturas de la sinagoga * conocía sus implicaciones mesiánicas.
Prácticamente
entendió la esencia del mensaje de Gabriel: "Vas a estar embarazada; vas a
nombrar a tu hijo Salvación, Él será el hijo de Dios, Él será el Mesías.
Eso es
bastante audible - Mary reflexionó sobre ello, lo entendió porque luego hizo la
pregunta muy lógica, (v34): "¿Cómo será esto, ya que soy virgen?"
Literalmente se pregunta: "¿Cómo puede ser que no haya conocido a un
hombre sexualmente?"
Ella no era
incrédula, estaba pidiendo iluminación. Era una pregunta biológica: "¿Cómo
va a hacer Dios esto?"
Tenía que
estar familiarizada con los nacimientos de Isaac, Samson y Samuel; todos fueron
concebidos de forma natural; entonces, su pregunta.
Un modelo
para todos
Para todos
los que han experimentado el nuevo nacimiento, que tienen a Jesús en ellos,
esta es una pregunta que muchos se han hecho; "Dios, ¿cómo es esto
posible?" Como la canción, "Why Me Lord?"
¿Alguna vez
te has preguntado: "Dios, cómo puedo experimentar la vida de Cristo en
mí?"
Es una
cuestión de vida en el sentido de que requiere un examen de la obra expiatoria
de Cristo en la cruz y cómo sus beneficios de limpieza nos llegan por fe.
Hay que
contemplar los misterios del nuevo nacimiento: la obra del Espíritu Santo, lo
que significa estar "en Cristo", ser "una nueva creación".
"¿Cómo
puede ser esto?" Este tipo de contemplación es un preludio para conocer a
Cristo.
La
explicación (vv 35-38)
La
respuesta que Gabriel le da a María es un presagio de la respuesta personal de
Dios para nosotros: El Espíritu Santo vendrá sobre ti, y el poder del Altísimo
te cubrirá con su sombra; por tanto, el niño que nacerá será llamado santo: el
Hijo de Dios. (v35).
¿Qué se
describe aquí? Overshadow es un término usado en el Antiguo Testamento griego
para describir la presencia de Dios en el santuario y en el Nuevo Testamento
por Su presencia eclipsante en el Monte de la Transfiguración.
La nube de
gloria cubrió a nuestro Señor y sus apóstoles - María misma ese día pudo haber
sentido algo; ¿Cómo puede alguien tener el Espíritu Santo sobre ellos como en
el templo o el monte de la transfiguración y no saberlo?
Tal vez
ocurrió en el momento en que Gabriel habló, o tal vez después; de cualquier
manera, Mary entendió el tremendo significado de lo que había escuchado.
Si uno
quiere creerlo o no es una cosa, pero no puede negar que lo que Gabriel
describió es nada menos que el nacimiento virginal de Cristo.
Aquellos
que han nacido de nuevo, que han experimentado la presencia de Cristo en ellos,
han experimentado la presencia de Dios y la obra milagrosa del Espíritu Santo
que da vida cuando ha venido sobre nosotros y nos ha dado nueva vida.
No todo el
mundo tiene una experiencia en el camino a Damasco como San Pablo - Pero sabes
que sabes, tienes esa profunda e inexplicable sacudida interior -
Jesús dijo,
lo que es nacido de la carne es carne, y lo que es nacido del Espíritu es
espíritu. (Juan 3:16);
Si el
Espíritu ha venido sobre nosotros y nos ha dado nueva vida, ¡lo sabrás! Pablo
escribe a los Romanos: El Espíritu mismo da testimonio a nuestro espíritu de
que somos hijos de Dios (8:16).
Gabriel
cumplió su misión y deja a María con una señal - prueba de lo dicho - he aquí,
tu pariente Isabel en su vejez también ha concebido un hijo, y este es el sexto
mes con ella que fue llamada estéril.
El embarazo
milagroso en la vejez de Isabel había estado oculto a María durante seis meses
- ¡Esto, guau! Las noticias acerca de que Isabel y María pasaron tiempo con la
anciana mujer piadosa resultarían de gran ayuda para la joven virgen -
Las últimas
palabras de Gabriel cuando se fue lo dijeron todo: nada será imposible para
Dios, (V37). Literalmente dice: "Porque no imposible será toda palabra de
Dios".
Dios
cumplirá Su palabra. –
Pero María
se acostumbró a someterse a Dios en todo. Su obediencia la convirtió en madre y
discípula de Cristo. (Lucas 8: 18-21; 11: 27-28); Ella sería fiel en la oración
(Hechos 1:14).
Para
concluir
¿Alguna vez
ha dicho o puede decir ahora: "Soy el siervo del Señor, puede ser como
usted dijo?" - ¿Ha sometido su vida a Dios como María? - Puedes decir
“Hágase en mí según tu palabra. . . “Con los labios apretados o con un tono de
resignación y derrota; O puede decirlo con alegría y expectativa.
Si puedes
decir que, como María, serás bendecido entre los habitantes de esta tierra:

Cristianos en Georgia, con respecto a las elecciones de segunda vuelta del Senado
Raphael Warnock obtuvo su maestría y doctorado en Union Theological Seminary en la ciudad de Nueva York. El Dr. James Cone, fundador y padre de la teología de la liberación negra fue su asesor de doctorado y mentor personal cercano hasta su reciente muerte.
Cone adoptó el principio marxista de que la vida es una lucha de los oprimidos contra los opresores. Definió a los opresores como blancos y la iglesia blanca y los oprimidos como negros y la iglesia negra. Luego redefinió el propósito de la fe cristiana como liberación de la opresión. En lo más alto de la lista de preocupación para los cristianos, aquellos que son creyentes nacidos de nuevo que creen en la muerte, entierro, resurrección y ascensión de Jesucristo, está que Warnock es más un seguidor de Cone que de Cristo. El Dr. Cone escribe en su libro fundacional, “Teología Negra y Poder Negro”, “No podemos resolver las cuestiones éticas del siglo XX mirando lo que hizo Jesús en el primero. Nuestras elecciones no son las mismas que las de él [las de Cristo]. Ser cristiano no significa seguir sus pasos ”. Warnock apoya el aborto sin restricciones a pedido, el matrimonio homosexual, los machos biológicos transgénero que compiten con las hembras biológicas. La Escritura dice en Hebreos Obedece a tus líderes [pastores, ancianos] y sométete a ellos; porque ellos velan por vuestras almas, como los que rinden cuentas. Que hagan esto con alegría y no con dolor, porque esto no sería provechoso para ti (Hebreos 13:17). Si el pastor no emite esta advertencia a esa persona destinada al infierno en el cuerpo de Cristo, la iglesia, Dios dice en Ezequiel 33: 7-9, "su sangre demandaré de tu mano". El pastor es responsable del cuidado del alma de los cristianos. Por negligencia o mal ejemplo, el pastor puede hacer pecar a uno de los preciosos hijos de Cristo. El Señor dio una severa advertencia al respecto: “Y cualquiera que haga tropezar a uno de estos pequeños que creen, mejor le sería que, con una pesada piedra de molino colgada del cuello, fuera arrojado al mar”. (Marcos 9:42). Jesús toma en serio la condición espiritual de sus santos y los valora mucho. Hebreos 12 nos dice que Jesús sufrió para "santificar al pueblo mediante su propia sangre". Y Hechos 20:28 lo pone aún más claramente: “Estad en guardia por vosotros mismos y por todo el rebaño, entre los cuales el Espíritu Santo os ha puesto por supervisores, para pastorear la iglesia de Dios que Él compró con su propia sangre”. La sangre de todo pastor, incluida la de Raphael Warnock, debería congelarse al leer Hebreos 13:17. Raphael Warnock earned his master’s and doctorate at Union Theological Seminary in New York City. Dr. James Cone, founder, and father of black liberation theology was his doctoral advisor and close personal mentor until his recent death.
Cone adopted the Marxist tenet that life is a struggle of the oppressed against oppressors. He defined the oppressors as whites and the white church and the oppressed as blacks and the black church. He then redefined the purpose of the Christian faith as deliverance from oppression.
High on the list of concern for Christians, those who are born-again believers who believe in the death burial resurrection, and ascension of Jesus Christ is that Warnock is more of a follower of Cone than Christ. Dr. Cone writes in his foundational book, “Black Theology and Black Power,” “We cannot solve ethical questions of the twentieth century by looking at what Jesus did in the first. Our choices are not the same as his [Christ’s]. Being Christians does not mean following in his steps.”
This is contrary to Jesus’ words, “If anyone would come after Me, let him deny himself and take up his cross and follow Me” (Matthew 16:24).
Paul to the Galatians (2:20) said, “I have been crucified with Christ. It is no longer I who live, but Christ who lives in me. And the life I now live in the flesh I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave himself for me.”
Warnock supports unrestricted abortion on demand, gay marriage, transgender biological males competing with biological females.
Scripture says in Hebrews Obey your leaders, [pastors, elders] and submit to them; for they keep watch over your souls, as those who will give an account. Let them do this with joy and not with grief, for this would be unprofitable for you (Hebrews 13:17). This is a terrifying responsibility and should strike fear into the heart of every pastor. this charge to pastors and elders is so serious because these souls being watched over are eternal. the responsibility for believing the gospel is on the individual. Ezekiel 18:20 makes it plain that it is individuals who are judged for their own sins. But ministers are charged as watchmen, undershepherds of the Great Shepherd with the responsibility of warning sinners of the impending judgment of God. If the pastor does not issue this warning to that hell-bound individual in the body of Christ, the church, God says in Ezekiel 33:7–9, “his blood I will require at your hand.”.
The pastor is responsible for the soul-care of Christians. By neglect or bad example, the pastor may cause one of Christ’s precious children to sin. The Lord gave a stern warning regarding this, “And whoever causes one of these little ones who believe to stumble, it would be better for him if, with a heavy millstone hung around his neck, he had been cast into the sea.” (Mark 9:42).
Jesus takes the spiritual condition of his saints seriously and values them highly. Hebrews 12 tells us Jesus suffered so that he would “sanctify the people through his own blood.” And Acts 20:28 puts it even more clearly, “Be on guard for yourselves and for all the flock, among which the Holy Spirit has made you overseers, to shepherd the church of God which He purchased with His own blood.”
Every pastor’s blood, including Raphael Warnock’s, should run cold at the reading of Hebrews 13:17. Because the souls he must give an account for are not only eternal, they are eternally valuable to Jesus Christ. He bought them with His own blood. This is a sobering responsibility.
Warnock was asked how the pro-choice views of the Democrat Party “square with” his “role as a minister, a leader of a church, a man of God.”
“I believe that healthcare is a human right,” He said “And I believe that it is something that the richest nation in the world provides for its citizens, and for me, reproductive justice is consistent with my commitment to that.
“I believe unequivocally in a woman's right to choose, and that the decision is something that we don't want government engaged in – that's between her and her doctor and her minister. And I will fight for that in the United States Senate, and at the same time continue to fight so women can receive the kind of services that they need in order to have a healthy pregnancy and healthy babies. We have a maternal death rate in this country that is exceedingly high, particularly to be the richest country in the world.”
Referencing his career as a minister and in public service, Warnock added, “I've been focused on women's health, women's choice, reproductive justice. That is consistent with my view as a Christian minister. And I will fight for it.” (Christian Headlines Monday, August 24, 2020).
Warnock’s words & use of Scripture are as deceptive as Satan’s words to Eve and his use of Scripture when tempting Christ in the wilderness. (Gen. 3; Matt. 4; Luke 4; & Mark 1).
The Didache, a first-century document, represents the preserved oral traditions detailing the training of Gentile converts. It is, was an anonymous “pastoral manual”. I can say more on the Didache but we would start down a rabbit trail. To apply it to Warnock’s comments concerning abortion, the 1st century Christians opposed abortion which was practiced by the Romans and others. The Didache was the first Christian statement opposing abortion and infanticide. The Didache as well as the early church father Justin Martyr doesn’t rely on any “new” teaching of Jesus Christ. The Christian sources embrace the prevailing Jewish reverence for human life: anyone deliberately aborting a formed fetus (drugs or surgery) extinguishes a human life; anyone extinguishing newborn infant risks becoming a murderer. In addition, there are variations in Decalogues for Gentile, You will not: kill your son in abortion (teaching of the Apostles); not murder offspring by means of abortion (Didache); not cause an abortion, (Ecclesiastic Cannons of the Apostles).
All that to say that Pastor Raphael Warnock is taking it upon himself to establish his own theology and is telling God Himself that he (Warnock) determines what is Truth. Unfortunately, he will answer to God when judged and answer for all the lost souls that he will be responsible for sending to hell because of his false teaching on that one point.

Introduction
God is transcendent, surpasses everything; He is supreme; He is
way beyond anything we can perceive, yet at the same time He is imminent. God
is involved with everything that happens in the universe all the time at the
same time.
There are scholars that say the church has a tendency to emphasize
one over the other - In the middle ages people approached God in awe &
wonder. Cathedrals built then were constructed to praise God’s majesty, His
loftiness. I’m sure you have visited the Basilica of St. John here in Savannah.
We live though in an age of immanence, we see God more as a
personal friend, which He is, than as a supreme Deity. He has come to be
more of a user-friendly-God than One Who is Holy & Majestic. That results
in a rather casual approach to worship. This isn’t meaning the style of worship
but the attitude that most worshipers seem to have.
Granted that the place where believers gather is just a building,
whether at home, in a rented theater, in a restaurant, but Jesus said that
where two or more are gathered in His name there He is in the midst of them.
Many go to church in the same way they’d stop by a friends house to watch a ball
game, rather than the way in which one would enter the room of a King, or even
the Oval Office.
Could it be that we’re too comfortable worshipping God than we
ought to be?
Annie Dillard, and American author of prose, poetry &
criticism wrote in her book of essays, Teaching a Stone to Talk, that
she worries many have forgotten how dangerous it is to come close into the
presence of God.
“I do not find Christians, outside of the catacombs, sufficiently
sensible of conditions. Does anyone have the foggiest idea what sort of power
we so blithely hold? Or, as I suspect, does no one believe a word of it? The
churches are children playing on the floor with their chemistry sets, mixing up
a batch of TNT to kill a Sunday morning. It is madness to wear ladies’ straw hats
& velvet hats to church; we should all be wearing crash helmets. Ushers
should issue life preservers & signal flares; they should lash us to our
pews.”
This chapter began with God assuring His love for His people -
They now have reached Mt. Sinai, the mountain of God, & here they would
actually meet with God.
God had reminded them how He carried out in eagles wings like a
mother bearing up her faltering young. He spoke tenderly to them; they had a
special place in His heart. The goal for their salvation was fellowship with
Him. They were His royal precious treasure.
They would be His people & He would be their God. Israel
responded in faith - and Moses called the elders & told them what God
commanded him.
When the elders passed to the people what God had said the people
said they’d do all God had said so then Moses took that reply back to the Lord.
Now God tells Moses that He is coming down personally to the mountain, Mt.
Sinai, but He’ll be in a but will be able to hear Him when He speaks to Moses
so that the people will believe in Moses, that he truly spoke with God.
The Creator is willing to come down from His throne, from heaven,
to His people. Nehemiah would later say as the people gathered to hear the
reading of the Law - Then You came down on Mount Sinai, And spoke with them from
heaven; You gave them just ordinances and true laws, Good statutes and
commandments.
(9:13).
We are shown that if God weren’t willing to
stoop down to our level & visit us, because of His transcendence, his
separateness, there would be now way whatsoever we would be able to see Him or
talk to Him.
But He is willing to come down to us. He is
transcendent & immanent, He says- the high and exalted One Who lives
forever, whose name is Holy, "I dwell [on] a high and holy place, And
[also] with the contrite and lowly of spirit In order to revive the spirit of
the lowly And to revive the heart of the contrite. Isaiah 57:15.
Now redemption is the story of God stooping down to save. From the
very beginning God walked with Adam & Eve. They heard Him as He walked,
they had to have known who it was; their actions of trying to hide implies they
were accustomed to waking and talking with Him in the cool of the day. Again
from Isaiah 57:15, the
high and exalted One Who lives forever, whose name is Holy, "I dwell [on]
a high and holy place, And [also] with the contrite and lowly of spirit In
order to revive the spirit of the lowly And to revive the heart of the
contrite.
We know sadly that Adam & Eve lost the
immediacy of God’s presence, but because of His great love, he’s been reaching
out ever since to restore our fellowship with Him. That’s why He sent his Son
into the world, to restore that fellowship. That Son’s name is Emmanuel, God
with us.
The Lord brought His people close & as they
did, they clearly saw there was a vast distance separating them from God. God
was revealing Himself & at the sametime concealing Himself - In different
ways God kept His distance; hiding in a dark cloud of glory as in verse 9;
Psalm 97:2a - Clouds and thick darkness surround Him; Isaiah 6:4 - the
foundations of the thresholds trembled at the voice of him who called out,
while the temple was filling with smoke. At the transfiguration in
Matt.17:5 - While he was still speaking, a bright cloud overshadowed
them,--
The clouds of glory suggest heavenly majesty
& concealment of the divine for our security, mankind’s. Being shroud in
mystery shows His otherness & separateness from His creature - Truly,
You are a God who hides Himself, O God of Israel, Savior! Isaiah 45:15.
He also kept His distance by telling Israel to
stay off His Holy Mountain - Coming down on the mountain alone made the
mountain itself holy by His presence. When God called to Moses from the burning
bush he told Moses Do not come near here; remove your sandals from your
feet, for the place on which you are standing is holy ground. Exodus
3:5. So now Moses has to set up a perimeter around the mountain so no one would
try to go up the mountain or even touch, I guess any part of it. I’m sure there
would have been souvenir relic hunters then. Mostly it would have been for
public safety. How do you describe God? He’s holy, majestic, so -- awesome,
that He is dangerous. Nadab & Abihu, Aaron’s sons in Leviticus 10:1-3: Now
Nadab and Abihu, the sons of Aaron, took their respective firepans, and after
putting fire in them, placed incense on it and offered strange fire before the
LORD, which He had not commanded them. 2 And fire came out from the presence of
the LORD and consumed them, and they died before the LORD. 3 Then Moses said to
Aaron, "It is what the LORD spoke, saying, 'By those who come near Me I
will be treated as holy, And before all the people I will be honored.'" So
Aaron, therefore, kept silent.
Uzzah in 1 Chronicle 13:10 who just touched the
Ark to keep it from falling: The anger of the LORD burned against
Uzza, so He struck him down because he put out his hand to the ark; and he died
there before God. For sinners coming into His presence means sudden
death, when He tells Moses, You cannot see My face, for no man can see Me
and live! So, the Israelites being brought by God to Himself were
somewhat too close for comfort so He kept them safe.
Could this be a warning to us? To believers,
christians to not have a presumptuous attitude in our worship? We all are in
the presence of a Holy & transcendent God & we should then - show
gratitude, by which we may offer to God an acceptable service with reverence
and awe; 29 for our God is a consuming fire. As Scripture tells us in
Hebrews 12:28b-29.
The Israelites have a dilemma. Being drawn
close into a personal relationship with a Holy God who was too dangerous to
even approach. God says, come here but if you do you die. What do they do to be
safe?
Well, no problemo, God has got it covered, He
has the answer. They are to prepare for His arrival - They were to be
consecrated - wash their garments demonstrating they knew God was holy & to
meet Him requires holiness. The preparation would be three days. I couldn’t
find why three days; maybe time for the garments to dry. Then to refrain from
being with a woman, just abstain from personal indulgence that would take their
minds off of God. Paul says as much in 1 Corinthians 7:5--
What about our preparation? What was true for
Israel is true for us but in a different way. The King of kings & Lord of
lords is coming, Jesus Christ. He came once to be born in a manger & to die
on a cross for sinners, us, the world. Soon He will come again to judge the
world -- Are we ready to meet Him?
Paul told the Corinthians in his second letter,
7:1 beloved, let us cleanse ourselves from all defilement of flesh
and spirit, perfecting holiness in the fear of God. David says in Psalm
4:3 & 4a - know that the LORD has set apart the godly man for
Himself; The LORD hears when I call to Him. 4 Tremble, and do not sin; Meditate
in your heart upon your bed, and be still.
Don’t get ahead of me; but when it comes to
meeting with God you can’t come as you are, recall we have
already been redeemed, we have been saved from our bondage - Scripture tells us
to Pursue peace with all men, and the sanctification without which no one will see
the Lord. Now,
we can’t make ourselves holy enough, pure enough, clean enough to meet God.
Manhas been trying to do that ever since sin entered into the world with the
fall. Just about every religion in the world has some sort of self-purification
- The religions of the world are all just a bunch of different ways to wash
your clothes as a way of getting ready for God. Unfortunately there isn’t a
soap made where we can clean up ourselves well enough for God. Our best
efforts, scrub as hard as you might, will still leave a stain, even a tiny
speck. God is perfect in holiness - all of us have become like one who is
unclean, And all our righteous deeds are like a filthy garment; And all of us
wither like a leaf, And our iniquities, like the wind, take us away.
(Isaiah 64:6).
A Mediator
To be ready to meet the King is more than
personal consecration - We need a mediator, a lawyer, someone to advocate for
us. Someone who can bridge the gap between the finite sinful people & the
holy transcendent God.
For Israel, Moses served as their mediator ever
since God called him to be a prophet at the burning bush -- Moses was given
special access to Him. when God had something to say to His people, He said it
to Moses who in turn said it to the people.
Moses represented the people before God. He
cried out to God when they were in need. Moses had to answer to God when the
people grumbled. Moses interceded for the people in prayer before the throne
with his hands raised. -- Moses was a two way messenger. He had to keep the
lines of communication open at all times. He was the
signal officer --
But as mediator he was charged with sitting
Israel apart as holy unto God. He consecrated. How? There’s nothing specific in
Scripture, but he did something & washing their clothes wasn’t enough. God
has to make them pure & this He did through His mediator Moses.
What action did Moses take? Most likely he
performed some kind of sacrifice. That is something that God always required
for holiness. That’s what Adam & Eve needed when they failed to cover up
their sin. But there God Himself covered them. (Gen. 3:21).
Moses offered a sacrifice to consecrate the
Israelites. He had precedence for this in his own experience. Before bringing
the Israelites out of Egypt God told Moses to Sanctify to Me every
firstborn, the first offspring of every womb among the sons of Israel, both of
man and beast; it belongs to Me, and by sacrificing for their sins an
animal, a one year old lamb.
Moses will do this later to set apart Aaron
& his sons as Israel’s priests. As mediator Moses’ role wasn’t just to converse
with God, but also to consecrate His people by making atonement for their sins.
To wrap this up,
This brings to what we need; A
mediator who will cleanse us from sin & consecrate us for God’s holy
service. And we have such a mediator - He has been retained for us all. He is a
better mediator, the best, He has obtained a more excellent
ministry, by as much as He is also the mediator of a better covenant, which has
been enacted on better promises. (Hebrews 8:6). The only one we’ll ever
need - Jesus Christ - If there was a riddle concerning God’s transcendence
& immanence, the answer is Jesus Christ.
He is Emmanuel - God with us - He is truly
divine - He possesses all of God’s Kingly majesty - He shares our humanity
because He is a real human being. He speaks with God for us & makes us pure
enough for God, Scripture says we have been sanctified through the
offering of the body of Jesus Christ once for all. (Heb. 10:10).
Through the person of His Son, Jesus the
transcendent God is immanent. He said to His disciple Phillip, “He who has seen Me
has seen the Father.” Without giving up His divine nature Jesus took on our human
nature & entered fully our lost condition, yet remaining sinless.
As a man Jesus revealed God to us; as a man He
suffered all the indignities of life on earth; as a man He suffered and died on
the cross for our sins.
“Veiled in flesh the Godhead see; Hail
th’incarnate Deity, Pleased as man with men to dwell, Jesus, our Emmanuel.”
