Que Dios añada Su bendición a la lectura de Su santa e infalible palabra.

Introducción

David Jeremiah en el prólogo de su libro, The Book of Signs, publicado en 2019, lo que significa que fue escrito antes de ese año, escribe: . . . habrá más y más enfermedades y devastación. Incluso hoy, millones de personas en el mundo se ven afectadas por la insuficiencia de alimentos, la propagación de nuevas enfermedades, la resistencia a los antibióticos y los efectos devastadores de los desastres naturales.

Luego llegó el final de 2019 y el mundialmente famoso Coronavirus-19, con la variante "D" una pandemia mundial y al comienzo del tercer año, la variante "Omicron". Agregue a esto, la mezcla de mensajes cruzados de aquellos que son los expertos y los líderes.

 No voy a especular si puedes contar esta "pandemia" como una de las señales de las que Jesús habló de que el mundo se está acercando al tiempo de la angustia de Jacob y su regreso, pero mira la reacción que todo esto está causando. dentro de esta nación y en todo el mundo.

El predicador puritano, Thomas Watson, dijo: “A Dios le encanta contrarrestar a los políticos; Él usa su propio ingenio para deshacerlos y cuelga a Amán en su propia horca”. Sabes que eso es del libro de Ester.

Esos son nuestros líderes políticos en estos días. Un día dicen una cosa, al día siguiente otra y así va que la gente no sabe bien qué es qué. Si escuchó el discurso del presidente el martes pasado, en lugar de abordar el tema del virus, simplemente divagó sobre dividir aún más a la nación,

Eso está causando confusión, miedo, depresión, pánico entre la gente y según los expertos médicos, dañando el estado mental de los jóvenes escolares; no solo aquí sino en todo el mundo.

Esto puede llevar a las personas, a las naciones, a buscar un líder, alguien estable, que venga y arregle toda esta confusión. Alguien que arreglará todo y quitará sus miedos. Sé que todos ustedes aquí recuerdan la crisis de los misiles en Cuba y lo cerca que estuvimos de un posible enfrentamiento nuclear. Bueno, las cosas se pondrán cada vez peor tanto que llegará al punto en que Jesús describió diciendo: Porque en aquel tiempo habrá una gran tribulación, sin igual desde el principio del mundo hasta ahora, y nunca más se verá. Si esos días no se hubieran acortado, nadie se salvaría. Pero por causa de los escogidos, aquellos días serán acortados. (Mateo 24:21-22).

Solo pensar en esto me pone nervioso. Tal vez no tanto por mí sino por los más jóvenes que yo, por los que no son salvos, por esos jóvenes que no tienen idea de lo que está por venir.

 Compañerismo

La Escritura nos dice en Hebreos 10:24-25 - Consideremos cómo estimularnos unos a otros al amor y a las buenas obras, no dejando de congregarnos, como algunos tienen por costumbre, sino exhortándonos unos a otros, y tanto más cuanto más ver el Día acercándose.

Este versículo desaprueba el fracaso por parte de los cristianos de reunirse con otros cristianos. El término griego que se usa aquí es enkataleipontes, que se refiere a "un abandono o abandono según la NASB". La ESV tradujo este término como "negligencia", ya que implica no hacer algo que uno debería estar haciendo. En términos claros, los cristianos tienen la obligación de tener comunión con otros cristianos. Esto no solo es necesario para el discipulado, sino para que podamos satisfacer las necesidades de los demás y animar e inspirar a otros cristianos en su fe (Hebreos 3:13; Colosenses 3:16). Sé que todos se cuidan y se preguntan unos a otros.

La vida cristiana no está destinada a ser vivida en aislamiento sino en comunión con otros creyentes. Por esta razón, Hebreos 10:24–25 nos dice que “consideremos cómo podemos estimularnos unos a otros al amor y a las buenas obras. No dejemos de congregarnos, como algunos tienen por costumbre, sino animémonos unos a otros, y tanto más cuanto veis que se acerca el día”. Si esperamos crecer espiritualmente y perseverar a largo plazo, necesitamos que nuestros hermanos y hermanas en Cristo nos animen.

Muchas iglesias tienen grupos de estudio en el hogar; Sé que Linda y Debbie también se reúnen con un grupo de estudio de mujeres.

Bueno, el escritor de Hebreos observó que muchos de sus lectores que profesaban ser cristianos estaban desechando su confianza en el Señor (Hebreos 10:35). La persecución y las dificultades pueden haber llevado a algunos a dejar de reunirse. La solución fue empezar a reunirnos de nuevo.

Durante los últimos 3 siglos, la Iglesia cristiana ha sido la piedra angular de la vida estadounidense, pero en las últimas 4 a 5 décadas mucho ha cambiado. Los estadounidenses asisten menos a la iglesia. Los millennials y los más jóvenes están llegando a la mayoría de edad en un momento de gran escepticismo y cinismo hacia las instituciones, particularmente la iglesia. Escuchas términos como "religión organizada", que es solo una forma de expresar tu disgusto por el cristianismo en una "forma políticamente correcta". Pensando en retrospectiva, lo veo como comenzando a principios de los años 60 después del asesinato de Kennedy y el fiasco de la guerra de Vietnam cuando la desconfianza de todo iba en aumento.- Agregue a esto la secularización más amplia de nuestra cultura.

El Barna Research Group en su informe El Estado De La Iglesia de 2016 informa que casi las tres cuartas partes de los estadounidenses (73%) dicen que son cristianos, mientras que (20%) afirman no tener fe en absoluto (eso incluye ateos y agnósticos). Luego (6 %) se identifica con religiones como el islam, el budismo, el judaísmo o el hinduismo, y el 1 % no está seguro. Del 73% me preguntaba cuántos son creyentes nacidos de nuevo en Jesucristo. Del 73%, el 31% son “cristianos practicantes” y el 41% “cristianos no practicantes”, sea lo que sea que eso signifique. Se me ocurrieron los CINO. Cristianos solo de nombre.

 

¿De quién es la culpa?

Detrás de todo esto acecha el Diablo, Satanás, el adversario y sus secuaces, quienes probablemente se regodean con lo que está pasando en la iglesia. En la reunión de pastores de este lunes pasado se discutió que a medida que avance el tiempo en nuestra situación actual, ni siquiera se logrará una “nueva normalidad”, sea lo que sea.

El padre de la mentira y la confusión, que no ha cambiado su estrategia y táctica desde la caída, debe creer que está ganando terreno contra Jesucristo. Es posible que simplemente esté diciendo, tratando de poner dudas en nuestras mentes: "¿Dijo Cristo realmente que las puertas del infierno no prevalecerán contra Su iglesia?" (Mateo 16:18).

Tal vez se está riendo y diciendo, mira la iglesia, siendo derrotado. Tal vez esté intentando hacer lo que intentó contra Job...

Miedo - Depresión

Los expertos, los políticos, los medios, están alimentando a la gente con nada más que pesimismo y conjeturas, y los líderes políticos electos simplemente se quedan congelados, como si no supieran qué hacer. Si estuvieran liderando tropas en combate, causarían la muerte de aquellos que confían en su liderazgo simplemente por su incapacidad para ejercer sus esfuerzos de manera constructiva. Recuerde la evacuación de Afganistán.

 Mientras conduzco a Savannah desde Pooler, puedo contar un mínimo de 6 iglesias que han estado cerradas, sin servicios, desde marzo de 2020.

¿Dónde tienen comunión, cómo son alimentados con la palabra viva de Dios? ¿Cómo participan de la Cena del Señor?

Luego está el público sin iglesia que también vive bajo el paraguas de lo siempre cambiante desconocido…

Bueno, de un artículo del pastor Leo Giovanetti, de MVCF, San Diego CA. con su permiso cito: Jesús advirtió a sus discípulos, y por tanto a nosotros también: "...Mirad que nadie os engañe". Mateo 24:4 (RV) El libro de Apocalipsis dice que en el último día, Dios juzgará al mundo por su corrupción/pecado y los hombres que tienen la reputación de ser los "Movers & Shakers" (Los grandes hombres)'

Los Centros para el Control y la Prevención de Enfermedades (CDC) es la agencia nacional de salud pública de los Estados Unidos. Ellos, junto con la Organización Mundial de la Salud (OMS), bajo la influencia directa del Dr. Anthony Fauci, han estado asustando a todo el mundo al declarar que la humanidad será destruida a menos que escuchemos y hagamos lo que nos ordena. ¡hacer!

¿Qué hacemos entonces? ¿En quién confiamos? Nosotros, Confiamos en Dios para la Seguridad; Se da seguridad a todos los que ponen su confianza en el Señor Dios:

Eso nos lleva al corazón del mensaje; Salmo 91, nuestra lectura receptiva de hoy. Spurgeon dice de este Salmo: “En toda la colección no hay un Salmo más alentador, su tono es elevado y sostenido en todo momento, la fe está en su mejor momento y habla con nobleza”.

Protección, consuelo y cuidado de Yahweh.

El que habita al abrigo del Altísimo, *

    mora bajo la sombra del Todopoderoso.

Él dirá al Señor:

"Tú eres mi refugio y mi fortaleza, *

    mi Dios en quien confío".

Moisés habló de Dios como la morada de Su pueblo. Las primeras líneas del Salmo 91 parecen llevar esa idea más allá. “Moisés habló de Dios como la morada, la habitación, el hogar del hombre. Este cantante parece aceptar esa gran idea, y luego habla de la cámara más central de la morada, refiriéndose a ella como el Lugar Secreto, y describiendo su completa seguridad.” (Morgan)

ii. Muchos seguidores de Jesucristo saben muy poco del lugar secreto del Altísimo o lo que es morar bajo Su sombra. Muchos parecen considerar esto como algo exclusivo de los místicos o de los superespirituales. Sin embargo, si David escribió esto, era un guerrero y un hombre muy familiarizado con las realidades de la vida. Es cierto que la vida del espíritu parece llegar más fácilmente a unos que a otros, pero hay un aspecto del lugar secreto del Altísimo que es para todo aquel que en Él pone su confianza.

iii. Charles Spurgeon dice: “Todo hijo de Dios mira hacia el santuario interior y el propiciatorio, pero no todos moran en el lugar santísimo; corren hacia él a veces y disfrutan de acercamientos ocasionales, pero no residen habitualmente en la presencia misteriosa”.

La sombra del Todopoderoso: “La expresión implica una gran cercanía. Debemos caminar muy cerca de un compañero, si queremos que su sombra caiga sobre nosotros”. (Duncan, citado en Spurgeon)

v. Spurgeon (tomando prestado de Frances Ridley Havergal) sugirió cuatro formas en que las Escrituras hablan de la sombra del Todopoderoso.

· La sombra de la roca (Isaías 32:2).

· La sombra del árbol (Cantar de los Cantares 2:3).

· La sombra de Sus alas (Salmo 63:7).

· La sombra de Su mano (Isaías 49:2).

vi. Estos primeros dos versículos del Salmo 91 usan cuatro maravillosos títulos o nombres para Dios:

· Altísimo: Elyon.

· Todopoderoso: Shadday.

· El SEÑOR: Yahvé.

· Dios mío: Elohay.

B. Él es mi refugio y mi fortaleza: El que vive íntimamente con Dios conoce la grandeza de Su protección. Dios mismo se convierte en un poderoso refugio y fortaleza para el creyente.

I. Mi refugio: “¿Alguna vez has dicho definitivamente, ‘Oh Señor, tú eres mi refugio’? ¿Huyendo del peligro te has cobijado en Él de la tempestad y del viento, de la rastra de día, y de la pestilencia de noche, del hombre y del diablo?. No solo lo pienses, sino dilo”. Recuerdo momentos en los que he corrido hacia Él -- (Meyer)

C. Dios mío, en él confiaré: Esta relación cercana con Dios y todos los beneficios que vienen de ella son para aquellos que conocen a Yahweh como Dios, y que verdaderamente confían en él. A medida que un creyente recibe Su protección, consuelo y cuidado, confía más en Dios y lo conoce cada vez más como Dios.

I. Spurgeon sugirió muchos ejemplos bíblicos diferentes de personas que tenían su propia expresión de la frase Mi Dios.

· Mi Dios es la confesión del joven converso (Rut, como en Rut 1:16).

· Mi Dios es la creencia del cristiano individual (Tomás, como en Juan 20:28).

· Mi Dios es la declaración del creyente cuando se le opone (Micaías, como en 1 Reyes 22:14). “. . . el mensajero que fue a llamar a Micaías le dijo: He aquí las palabras del los profetas de común acuerdo son favorables al rey. Sea vuestra palabra como la palabra de uno de ellos, y hablad favorablemente. 14 Pero Micaías dijo: Vive el SEÑOR, que lo que el SEÑOR me diga, eso hablaré.

· Mi Dios es el voto secreto del creyente en la consagración (Jacob, como en Génesis 32:28-30).

· Mi Dios es el más profundo consuelo para los hijos de Dios en gran aflicción (Jesús, como en Mateo 27:46). Jesús clamó a gran voz, diciendo: "Eli, Eli, lema sabachthani?" es decir, "Dios mío, Dios mío, ¿por qué me has desamparado?"

· Mi Dios es la celebración del creyente victorioso (Miriam, como en Éxodo 15:21).

 

(3-4) Cómo Dios trae Su protección, consuelo y cuidado.

Ciertamente Él te librará del lazo del cazador (trampero)

y de la pestilencia peligrosa; [el virus covid]

Él te cubrirá con sus plumas,

Y bajo sus alas te refugiarás;

Su verdad será tu escudo y adarga.

una. Ciertamente él te librará del lazo del cazador: Ahora el salmista describe las formas específicas en que Dios protege y cuida a su pueblo – comenzando con el rescate de aquellos que atraparían al pueblo de Dios como el cazador atrapa a las aves.

I. Estas son “…metáforas de los complots que enredarían nuestros asuntos (Salmo 140:1-5) o comprometerían nuestra lealtad (Salmo 119:110)”. (Kidner)

ii. “Somos insensatos y débiles como pobres pajaritos, y somos muy propensos a ser atraídos hacia nuestra destrucción por enemigos astutos, pero si moramos cerca de Dios, él se encargará de que el engañador más hábil no nos atrape”. (Spurgeon)-

iii. El diablo y sus agentes a menudo trabajan como el cazador/trampero: trabajan en secreto, cambian las trampas y los métodos; a menudo atraen con placer o ganancia; a menudo usan un señuelo, te atrapan con mentiras y falsas acusaciones.

IV. James Boice comenta: “La característica más llamativa de esta sección (y la siguiente) es el uso del singular tú.

en todo, lo cual es una forma de decir que estas verdades son para cada persona individualmente. Son para ti si verdaderamente confías o permaneces en Dios”.

B. Y de la pestilencia peligrosa: Dios también protege a Su pueblo en tiempos de plaga y enfermedad. El salmista, inspirado por el Espíritu Santo, no pretendía esto como una promesa absoluta de que todo creyente sería librado de todo lazo o toda pestilencia. En cambio, la idea es que el salmista podría señalar muchas ocasiones en las que Dios hizo precisamente eso por Su pueblo confiado.

I. Una vez más, James Boice comenta: “Esto no significa que aquellos que confían en Dios nunca mueran de enfermedades infecciosas o sufran por el complot de un enemigo. Significa que aquellos que confían en Dios habitualmente están libres de tales peligros. ¿Qué cristiano no puede testificar de muchas de esas liberaciones?” Piensa en momentos de tu vida, incluso cuando no eras salvo ---

ii. “Lord Craven, cristiano, era un noble que vivía en Londres cuando la peste asoló la ciudad en el siglo XV. Para escapar de la pestilencia que se extendía, Craven decidió dejar la ciudad para irse a su casa de campo, como lo hicieron muchos de su posición social. Ordenó que le prepararan el carruaje y el equipaje. Pero mientras caminaba por uno de los pasillos de su casa a punto de entrar en su carruaje, escuchó a uno de sus sirvientes decir a otro: 'Supongo que mi señor se va de Londres para evitar la peste que su Dios vive en el campo y no en la ciudad.” Era un comentario directo y aparentemente inocente. Pero a Lord Craven le impactó tan profundamente que canceló su viaje diciendo: “Mi Dios vive en todas partes y puede preservarme tanto en la ciudad como en el campo”. Me quedaré donde estoy. Así que se quedó en Londres. Ayudó a las víctimas de la peste y él mismo no contrajo la enfermedad”. (Boice)

IV. “Los hijos de Dios no siempre son inmunes a las plagas y pestilencias físicas; pero siempre están protegidos de las fuerzas espirituales destructivas mientras moran en el lugar secreto del Altísimo.” (Morgan)

C. Con sus plumas te cubrirá: En una metáfora, Dios es representado como un pájaro, protegiendo a los polluelos debajo de Sus alas –

I. “La madre águila, extendiendo su... ala sobre sus aguiluchos, es un maravilloso símbolo de la unión de poder y dulzura”. (Maclarén) –

ii. Lutero dijo; “Es la fe la que te hace el pollito, y Cristo la gallina; para que te escondas, y esperes, y revolotees, y te cubras bajo sus alas; porque hay salud en sus alas.” (trampa)

iii. Boice conectó Mateo 23:37 con el versículo 4: “Jesús habría salvado y protegido a Jerusalén y sus habitantes, pero la gente no estaba dispuesta. Ellos no vendrían a él. Ellos no 'morarían' en el refugio del Altísimo. En su lugar, clamaron por su crucifixión”. (Boice) – Hoy el pueblo lo maldice por cómo están las cosas.

D. Escudo y adarga será su verdad: La protección de Dios continúa con Su verdad representada como el escudo más pequeño, a menudo redondo, y el escudo más grande, a menudo rectangular, el adarga.

I. “En cuanto al cuidado de Dios, combina la cálida protección de un pájaro padre con la fuerza dura e inquebrantable de una armadura”. (Kidner)

iii. Boice en broquel: “La palabra hebrea significa algo que se envuelve alrededor de una persona para su protección; La policía usa un chaleco de Kevlar que cubre el pecho, los costados y la espalda. Dios es mayor protección si habitas en el escondrijo secreto.

 Padre, te damos gracias por este Salmo, este Himno. Nos desafía, nos reprende, nos motiva, nos emociona. Tu Palabra es fuente inagotable de tesoro y gran consuelo. Bendícelo ahora, oramos, a nuestros corazones y vidas por el bien de Jesús. Amén.

The Hiding Place

May God add His blessing to the reading of His holy and inerrant word.

Introduction

David Jeremiah in the prologue to his book, The Book of Signs, published in 2019, which means it was written before that year, writes: . . . there will be more and more disease and devastation. Even today millions of people in the world are being affected by insufficient food, the spread of new diseases, antibiotic resistance, and the devastating effects of natural disasters.

Then along came the end of 2019 and the world famous Coronavirus-19, with the “D” variant a world-wide pandemic & at the beginning of the 3rd year, the “Omicron” variant. Add to this, the mixed, cross messaging of those who are the experts and the leaders.

 I’m not going to speculate on whether you can count this “pandemic” as one of the signs which Jesus spoke of that the world is getting closer to the time of Jacob’s Trouble & His return but look at the reaction that all this is causing within this nation & throughout the world. 

The puritan preacher, Thomas Watson said: “God loves to counterplot politicians; He uses their own wit to undo them and hangs Haman on his own gallows.” You know that is from the book of Esther. 

That’s our political leaders these days. One day they say one thing, the following day another and so it goes that people don’t really know what is what. If you listened to the president’s speech this past Tuesday, instead of addressing the issue of the virus he just rambled on further dividing the nation,

That is causing confusion, fear, depression, panic amongst the people and according to the medical experts, damaging the mental state of the young school children; not just here but world-wide. 

This can lead people, nations, to look for a leader, someone stable, that will come in and fix all this turmoil. Someone who will fix everything & take away their fears. I know all of you here remember the Cuban missile crisis and how close we were to a possible nuclear showdown. Well things will be getting worse and worse so much so that it will reach the point which Jesus described saying, For at that time there will be great tribulation, unmatched from the beginning of the world until now, and never to be seen again. If those days had not been cut short, nobody would be saved. But for the sake of the elect,those days will be cut short. (Matt. 24:21-22).

Just thinking about this makes me nervous. Maybe not so much for myself but for those younger than me, for those not saved, for those young people that have no idea what is about to come.

 Fellowship

Scripture tells us in Hebrews 10: 24-25 - let us consider how to stir up one another to love and good works, not neglecting to meet together, as is the habit of some, but encouraging one another, and all the more as you see the Day drawing near. 

This verse disapproves of failure on the part of Christians, to meet with other Christians. The Greek term used here is enkataleipontes, referring to "an abandonment or forsaking according to the NASB." The ESV translated this term as "neglect," since it implies a failure to do something one ought to be doing. In clear terms, Christians have an obligation to fellowship with other Christians. This is not only necessary for discipleship, but so that we can meet each other's needs, and encourage and inspire other Christians in their faith (Hebrews 3:13; Colossians 3:16). I know that y’all look after each other and ask one another about each other.

The Christian life is not meant to be lived in isolation but in fellowship with other believers. For this reason, Hebrews 10:24–25 tells us to “consider how we may spur one another on toward love and good deeds. Let us not give up meeting together, as some are in the habit of doing, but let us encourage one another—and all the more as you see the Day approaching.” If we hope to grow spiritually and endure for the long haul, we need our brothers and sisters in Christ for encouragement.

Many churches have home study groups; I know Linda and Debbie you also meet with a women’s group study.

Well, the writer of Hebrews observed that many of his readers who professed to be Christians were throwing away their trust in the Lord (Hebrews 10:35). Persecution and hardship may have led some to give up meeting together. The solution was to start meeting together again.

For the past 3 centuries, the Christian Church has been the cornerstone of American life but in the last 4 to 5 decades much has changed. Americans are attending church less. Millennials and younger, are coming of age during a time of great skepticism & cynicism towards institutions, particularly the church. You hear terms like “organized religion” which is just a way of saying your disgust of Christianity in a “politically correct form.” Thinking back I see it as beginning in the early 60s after Kennedy’s assassination and the fiasco of the Vietnam war when distrust of everything was on the rise.- Add to this the broader secularizing of our culture.

The Barna Research Group in their The State of the Church 2016 -  report that almost three-quarters of Americans (73%) say they are a Christian, while (20%) claim no faith at all (that includes atheists and agnostics). Then (6%) identify with faiths like Islam, Buddhism, Judaism or Hinduism, and 1 percent are unsure. Of the 73% I wondered how many are born-again believers in Jesus Christ. Of the 73%, 31% are “practicing Christians” & 41% “non-practicing Christians”, whatever that means. I came up with the CINO’s. Christians In Name Only.

 

Who's fault is it?

Behind all of this lurks the Devil, Satan, the adversary & his minions, who probably is gloating over what is happening in the church. At the pastor’s meeting this past Monday it was discussed that as time progresses in our current situation, not even a “new normal”, whatever that is supposed to be, will be achieved.

The father of lies and confusion, who hasn’t changed his strategy & tactics since the fall, must believe he is gaining ground against Jesus Christ. He may just be saying, trying to put doubt in our minds, “Did Christ really say that the gates of hell will not prevail against His church?” (Matt. 16:18). 

Maybe he’s laughing and saying, look at the church, being defeated. Maybe he’s attempting to do what he tried against Job …

Fear - Depression

The experts, the politicians, the media, are feeding the people nothing but doom & gloom & comjectures, and the elected political leader’s just stand frozen, as if not knowing what to do. If they were leading troops in combat, they would cause the death of those relying on their leadership simply for their inability to exert their efforts in a constructive manner. Remember the evacuation of Afghanistan.  

 As I drive to Savannah from Pooler, I can count a minimum of 6 churches that have been closed, no services, since March 2020.

Where do they fellowship, how are they fed the living word of God? How do they partake of the Lord’s Supper?

Then there’s the unchurched public who are also living under the umbrella of the ever changing unknown…..

Matthew 24:4 (KJV) The book of Revelation says in the last day, God will judge the world for its corruption/sin and the men who have a reputation of being the "Movers & Shakers" (The great men)'

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) is the national public health agency of the United States. They along with the World Health Organization (WHO), under the direct influence of Dr. Anthony Fauci have been scaring the daylights out of the whole world by declaring that humanity is going to be destroyed unless we listen and do what he is ordering us to do!

What Then Do We Do? Who do we trust? We, Trust God for Assurance; Assurance is given to all those who put their trust in the Lord God -  

That brings us to the heart of the message; Psalm 91, our responsive reading today. Spurgeon says of this Psalm, “In the whole collection there is not a more cheering Psalm, its tone is elevated and sustained throughout, faith is at its best, and speaks nobly.”

Protection, comfort, and care of Yahweh.

He who dwells in the shelter of the Most High, *

    abides under the shadow of the Almighty.

He shall say to the LORD,

"You are my refuge and my stronghold, *

    my God in whom I put my trust."

Moses spoke of God as the dwelling place of His people. The opening lines of Psalm 91 seem to take that idea further. “Moses spoke of God as the dwelling-place, the habitation, the home of man. This singer seems to accept that great idea, and then speaks of the most central chamber of the dwelling-place, referring to it as the Secret Place, and describing its complete security.” (Morgan)

ii. Many followers of Jesus Christ know very little of the secret place of the Most High or what it is to abide under His shadow. Many seem to regard this as only a thing for mystics or the super-spiritual. Yet David, if he wrote this, was a warrior and man well acquainted with the realities of life. It is true that the life of the spirit seems to come more easily for some than for others, but there is an aspect of the secret place of the Most High that is for everyone who puts his trust in Him.

iii. Charles Spurgeon says, “Every child of God looks towards the inner sanctuary and the mercy-seat, yet all do not dwell in the most holy place; they run to it at times, and enjoy occasional approaches, but they do not habitually reside in the mysterious presence.” 

            The shadow of the Almighty: “The expression implies great nearness. We must walk very close to a companion, if we would have his shadow fall on us.” (Duncan, cited in Spurgeon)

v. Spurgeon (borrowing from Frances Ridley Havergal) suggested four ways the Scripture speaks of the shadow of the Almighty.

· The shadow of the rock (Isaiah 32:2).

· The shadow of the tree (Song of Solomon 2:3).

· The shadow of His wings (Psalm 63:7).

· The shadow of His hand (Isaiah 49:2).

vi. These first two verses of Psalm 91 use four wonderful titles or names for God:

· Most High: Elyon.

· Almighty: Shadday.

· The LORD: Yahweh.

· My God: Elohay.

b. He is my refuge and my fortress: The one who lives intimately with God knows the greatness of His protection. God Himself becomes like a mighty refuge and fortress for the believer.

i. My refuge: “Have you ever said definitely, ‘O Lord, thou art my refuge’? Running from danger have you sheltered in Him from the windy storm and tempest, from the harrow by day, and pestilence by night, from man and devil?. Do not only think it, but say it.” I recall times when I have run to Him -- (Meyer)

c. My God, in Him I will trust: This close relationship with God and all the benefits that come from it are for those who know Yahweh as God, and who truly trust in Him. As a believer receives His protection, comfort, and care, he trusts God all the more, and increasingly knows Him as God.

i. Spurgeon suggested many different Biblical examples of people who had their own expression of the phrase My God.

· My God is the young convert’s confession (Ruth, as in Ruth 1:16).

· My God is the individual Christian’s belief (Thomas, as in John 20:28).

· My God is the declaration of the believer when opposed (Micaiah, as in 1 Kings 22:14).  “. . . the messenger who went to summon Micaiah said to him, "Behold, the words of the prophets with one accord are favorable to the king. Let your word be like the word of one of them, and speak favorably." 14 But Micaiah said, "As the LORD lives, what the LORD says to me, that I will speak."

· My God is the secret vow of the believer in consecration (Jacob, as in Genesis 32:28-30).

· My God is the deepest comfort to God’s children in great woe (Jesus, as in Matthew 27:46).  Jesus cried out with a loud voice, saying, "Eli, Eli, lema sabachthani?" that is, "My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?"

· My God is the celebration for the victorious believer (Miriam, as in Exodus 15:21).

           

(3-4) How God brings His protection, comfort, and care.

Surely He shall deliver you from the snare of the fowler(trapper)

And from the perilous pestilence; [the virus covid]

He shall cover you with His feathers,

And under His wings you shall take refuge;

His truth shall be your shield and buckler.

a. Surely He shall deliver you from the snare of the fowler: Now the psalmist describes the specific ways God protects and cares for His people – beginning with rescue from those who would trap God’s people as the fowler snares birds.

i. These are “…metaphors for the plots which would entangle our affairs (Psalm 140:1-5) or compromise our loyalty (Psalm 119:110).” (Kidner)

ii. “We are foolish and weak as poor little birds, and are very apt to be lured to our destruction by cunning foes, but if we dwell near to God, he will see to it that the most skillful deceiver shall not entrap us.” (Spurgeon) –

iii. The devil and his agents often work as the fowler/trapper works: They work in secret, they change the traps and methods; often entice with pleasure or profit; often use a decoy, they trap you with lies and false accusations.

iv. James Boice comments “The most striking feature of this section (and the one following) is the use of the singular you throughout, which is a way of saying that these truths are for each person individually. They are for you if you will truly trust or abide in God.”

b. And from the perilous pestilence: God also protects His people in times of plague and disease. The psalmist, inspired by the Holy Spirit, did not intend this as an absolute promise that every believer would be delivered from every snare or every pestilence. Instead, the idea is that the psalmist could point to many times when God did just that for His trusting people.

i. Again James Boice comments,“This does not mean that those who trust God never die from infectious diseases or suffer from an enemy’s plot. It means those who trust God are habitually delivered from such dangers. What Christian cannot testify to many such deliverances?” Think back to times in your life, even when you weren’t saved ---

ii. “Lord Craven, a Christian, was a nobleman who was living in London when plague ravaged the city in the fifteenth century. In order to escape the spreading pestilence Craven determined to leave the city for his country home, as many of his social standing did. He ordered his coach and baggage made ready. But as he was walking down one of the halls of his home about to enter his carriage, he overheard one of his servants say to another, ‘I suppose by my lord’s quitting London to avoid the plague that his God lives in the country and not in town.’ It was a straightforward and apparently innocent remark. But it struck Lord Craven so deeply that he canceled his journey, saying, ‘My God lives everywhere and can preserve me in town as well as in the country. I will stay where I am.’ So he stayed in London. He helped the plague victims, and he did not catch the disease himself.” (Boice)

iv. “Children of God are not always immune from physical plague and pestilence; but they are ever guarded from destructive spiritual forces as they dwell in the secret place of the Most High.” (Morgan)

c. He shall cover you with His feathers: In a metaphor, God is represented as a bird, sheltering young chicks under His wings –

i. “The mother eagle, spreading her…wing over her eaglets, is a wonderful symbol of the union of power and gentleness.” (Maclaren)

ii. Luther said; “it is faith which maketh thee the little chicken, and Christ the hen; that thou mayest hide, and hope, and hover, and cover under his wings; for there is health in his wings.” (Trapp)

iii. Boice connected Matthew 23:37 to verse 4: “Jesus would have saved and sheltered Jerusalem and its inhabitants, but the people were not willing. They would not come to him. They would not ‘dwell’ in the shelter of the Most High. They cried out for his crucifixion instead.” (Boice) – Today the people curse Him for the way things are.

d. His truth shall be your shield and buckler: God’s protection continue with His truth represented as the smaller, often round shield and the larger, often rectangular shield, the buckler.

i. “As for God’s care, it combines the warm protectiveness of a parent bird with the hard, unyielding strength of armour.” (Kidner)

iii. Boice on buckler: “The Hebrew word signifies something that is wrapped around a person for his or her protection; Police wear a Kevlar vest which covers the chest, the sides and the back. God is a greater protection if you dwell in the secret hiding place.

 Father, we thank you for this Psalm, this Hymn. It challenges us, rebukes us, motivates us, thrills us. Your Word is a never-ending source of treasure and great comfort. Bless it now, we pray, to our hearts and lives for Jesus’ sake. Amen.
